GrayBear Scandi - Yrjö Puronvarsi 95mm

I’ve been making knives like these for years now- captivated by the simple lines, materials, and blade shape, I’ve fallen in love with these knives.

A twist on the centuries-old tradition of ‘Puukko’ knives from Scandinavia, the tradition of a simple, ‘zero’ grind bevel blade combined with antler and timber, this example is a pretty special mix of hand-forged blade, Red Mallee timber burl, Reindeer antler, and leather spacers.

The blade on this knife is hand-made- forged in a small family blacksmith shop in the Finnish town of Härmä. The manufacturing tradition is inherited from generation to generation in the family. The knives are currently made by Antti Mäkinen under the brand of his grandfather (Yrjo Puronvarsi). The blades are hand-forged from Krupp C75 carbon steel and are exceptional in their rhombic shape - their thickest point is at the point where the grind begins.

The timber burl is phenomenal- looks alive when freshly oiled- paired with the antler, it’s something special.

Comes with a handmade sheath, parting from tradition, in a simple ‘western’ shape- can be ordered left or right-handed. Made with stout, veg-tanned leather, with a double welt for safety- finished with hand stitching and riveted belt loop.
