Spoons...

Spoons.

For most, a simple utensil. Grab it from the drawer and go. For some though, like me, they’re more. They’re representative of a whole stack of different skills and knowledge that culminate in something beautiful and useful.

I’ve carved more than I have here, but this collection is most of what I’ve saved or found over the years. Some are *just the right shape. Some are nothing like the right shape. Some have split as I’ve carved, some have cracked later…some were just one wrong cut from a perfect spoon.

There’s much to know as you carve- grain direction, knife grips and carving techniques. Wood quality, edge geometry, tool maintenance… carving a simple spoon means touching a variety of disciplines- perhaps the reason why I like it so much, it keeps my curiosity satisfied. To get really good at spoons you have to know enough about enough to get it really right, its a skill to master.

Have go.
